Carol & Bruce Hyland developed their first luxury boutique B&B Inn in Devonport, Auckland in 1992. In 1996, they bought the house next door, and opened Hyland House, a more exclusive and elegantly luxurious accommodation (now reverted to a private home). After 10 years hosting more than 12,000 guests from around the world, the lure of Akaroa, and the beauty of the South Island enticed them into a new venture - Maison de la Mer.
Carol is New Zealand born, although she lived overseas for 26 years in England and Canada. She has a lifelong interest in food, art, architecture and interior design.
Bruce has a Canadian background. His business experience has been as a Management Consultant, specializing in strategic planning with large companies, around the world. He has a passion for sailing and continues to race sailboats in Akaroa harbour.
Both Carol and Bruce love to travel, and during the 1980s they and their three young children embarked on a series of year long adventures living aboard their sailboat in the Bahamas.
Carol and Bruce have totally refurbished Maison de la Mer to be a warm, elegant, romantic experience for their guests. They still travel extensively, and appreciate the special meaning of a warm personal welcome when traveling to new places.
